I am in the process of evaluating Quantconnect for my needs. I would like to avoid the 20 sec delay of the free tier. I do not understand whether the Researcher Seat (price of $10 per month) is sufficient to run backtests without delay or do I need to pay more for nodes etc?
Mia Alissi
The Researcher Seat is a subscription that provides additional benefits such as priority support, faster backtesting, and more. However, to remove the 20-second delay when launching backtests, you would need to upgrade the tier of your organization and add a new backtesting node. The first organization on each account is given one free B-MICRO backtesting node which has a 20-second delay. This delay is removed and the node is replaced when you upgrade the tier of your organization and add a new backtesting node.
The price of each backtesting node model can be found on the Pricing page. The number of backtesting nodes that you can have in your organization depends on the tier of your organization. For example, the Quant Researcher tier allows for 2 nodes.

I have no organization, just a single private researcher - so how much will it cost to perform single backtests without 20 sec delay?
Mia Alissi
To perform single backtests without the 20-second delay, you would need to upgrade from the free tier. The first organization on each account is given one free B-MICRO backtesting node which has a 20-second delay. This delay is removed and the node is replaced when you upgrade the tier of your organization and add a new backtesting node.
As a single private researcher, you might want to consider the Quant Researcher tier. This tier allows for up to two backtesting nodes to run up to two concurrent backtests. The cost of each backtesting node model can be found on the Pricing page.
Please note that the Quant Researcher tier costs $10 per month, and the cost of the backtesting node is separate. The exact cost will depend on the specific backtesting node model you choose.

And what is the difference between a backtest node and a research node?
Mia Alissi
A backtesting node and a research node serve different purposes in the QuantConnect platform.
A backtesting node is used to simulate the historical performance of your trading algorithm. It's a term to describe the compute hardware when your algorithm runs. QuantConnect creates "virtual nodes", which enable you to spin up multiple backtests with your on-premise hardware. When you run multiple backtests, each one runs in a separate container on the same host machine. You can view all your virtual nodes in the Resources panel.
On the other hand, a research node is used in the Research Environment, which is a Jupyter notebook-based, interactive command-line environment where you can access QuantConnect's data through the
QuantBook
class. The Research Environment allows you to perform data analysis, produce plots, train machine learning models, and import your backtest results for further analysis before you run backtests. Several models of research nodes are available, and more powerful research nodes allow you to handle more data and run faster computations in your notebooks. For more detailed information, please refer to the Research Environment and Resources sections in the QuantConnect documentation.

Ok so my understanding is that for $24 per month ($10 for Researcher Seat and $14 for Backtest Node) I will be able to perform a single backtest without delay?
Mia Alissi
Yes, your understanding is correct. With the Quant Researcher tier at $10 per month and a backtesting node at $14 per month, you would be able to perform single backtests without the 20-second delay. This setup would cost you a total of $24 per month.
Please note that the exact cost of the backtesting node can vary depending on the specific model you choose. You can find more details on the Pricing page.
