Welcome Joel, if you select backtesting-desktop environment in the configuration file you can get desktop charting. You'll need to enter your user id and access token from your account page.

Could you elaborate how to get local charting working? I've been following https://www.quantconnect.com/lean/docs#topic13.html and https://www.quantconnect.com/blog/quantconnect-charting-api/,
entered my user id ("job-user-id") and access token ("api-access-token") in config.json, called Plot in order to chart the data, and built and ran the program without errors. The statistics and other stuff are output in the console just fine. But how should I expect to see a chart pop up somewhere?
Jared Broad
HI Jaakko, you'll need to set the environment to "backtesting-desktop" to get the chart to pop up :) We'll make a blog post about it soon.

Hi Jared, Jaako, Joel,
Some questions (sorry if they are dumb questions)
Jared Broad
Hi Carlos - I've updated the account page to include your user id.
It is not possible to stream data from QC at this time due to licensing restrictions; but we provide the toolbox project to download data from free online sources to your PC.

I'm amazed at such a fast response. Many thanks Jared!
I've been exploring QuantConnect Lean and I'm loving it! So I'll code the algorithms in Visual Studio using the neat intellisense/autocomplete and run them online to leverage the QuantConnect dataset. I'm planning to transfer my equity (and maybe expiring CFD/futures) strategy from RightEdge to QuantConnect. Same C# language, but significantly less complexity as most of the infrastructure headache is removed. Thanks again!
Jim Lawson
Jared,
Can you detail exactly how to execute the toolbox project? I'm looking to use data from Google but I can't figure out how to execute the toolbox project in order to pull down data and have it curated for the QC Lean local project. I'm more comfortable with developing within Visual Studio because intellisense allows me to explore portions of the infrastructure within the confines of the immediate class file.

Thanks for feedback Ian. I've added it to the agenda for this week.

Jared,
After downloading LEAN engine from github site, there is no /UserInterface/bin/Debug folder with file QuantConnect.Views.exe appeared, thus I can't run desktop charting with Visual Studio. How can I fix it?
Alexandre Catarino
The QuantConnect.Views project is compiling in Release mode by default.
You can either change it in Visual Studio or you can edit the config.json file changing
"desktop-exe": "../../../UserInterface/bin/Debug/QuantConnect.Views.exe"
for
"desktop-exe": "../../../UserInterface/bin/Release/QuantConnect.Views.exe"
Mike Murray
Thanks, Alexandre! Will try.
Mike Murray
In both folders Release and Debug there is no such a file QuantConnect.Views.exe. Any idea where to get it?
Alexandre Catarino
In the Solution Explorer, right click on the QuantConnect.Views project and select Build from the menu.
It will compile the project and then you will be able to see the excutable in one of those folders.
Mike Murray
Many kudos!

Folks, Thanks for this.
I've been trying to get charting to work to no avail.
everything seems working fine, sell/buy order sems correct, everything is good except for the charting.
I've added the userid and access token, changed to backtesting-desktop, and the QuantConnectViews.exe open fine but no charts.
hen I click "Equity" or "Benchmark" on the views, I see On the console window "Activating"
how can I get charting to work? (my strategy doesn't use plot for now)
Thanks

Thank you Jared.

Hi,
I would like to continue back test on the web, however, would prefer to do coding locally in VS. Is there an easy way of doing this by some kind of link, or is it necessary to download LEAN into VS etc. for a desktop environment. I am trading equities for this strategy (not FX which is downloadable).
